"I am God, the God of your father, do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again."
When I read this communication from God to Israel I felt like I had never read it before. We focus on the story of Exodus so much--the "let my people go" part--that we forget that God actually sent his people TO Egypt--they were not carried off into captivity.
Mt. Sinai as a Thin Place

Alright! We made it through Genesis! For me, this chapter in God's story was about how He seeks us mortals out and makes promises--promises he keeps. I also find it interesting how it is consistently the younger child who gets favored and blessed, even though everyone kept trying to make it the first born. And did anyone else notice that Jacob's worldly aspirations to power never amounted to anything? First he took Esau's inheritance, but he didn't stick around and ended up working for Leban for everything he had. And the blessing, and the curse that Isaac gives? I didn't notice Jacob ruling over Esau. Sounds like the only blessings and promises that really count are God's.
