Jacob and Esau play out all the aspects of a disfunctional family. Dad loves one, Mom loves the other, jealousy reigns, revenge results. If we don't believe that humans are sinful--we are not reading the Bible very carefully. Yes, Lavon, many of these stories are really too "R-rated" for Sunday School children. I do think that, however, that as soon as our youth are able to watch more than "the disney channel" they should be taught the real story of the Bible.
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteFor those who have the time and are interested, there is a terrific book--a kind of commentary on Genesis--titled "Wrestling with Angels" by Naomi Rosenblatt. She's Jewish (duh) and a therapist. She writes her commentary on Genesis from a perspective of family systems, and it's fascinating. There are no perfect families in the Bible, not even Jesus' family. The geneaologies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke reveal that there are a lot of rascals in Jesus' family tree. God welcomes all kinds of folks into his family, and uses all kinds of people to accomplish his purposes. That's cool.
Thanks so much for the book recommendation, Hallack! It has been a little confusing to me to read about these families in Genesis that are so sinful and yet are in Jesus' family line.
